Azerbaijan has expressed its discontent with Saturday's reestablishing of diplomatic relations between Armenia and Turkey.

A declaration of the Azerbaijan Foreign Ministry states that the normalization of the ties between Armenia and Turkey before the resolving of the decades-long conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia over the Nagorno-Karabakh enclave was in contradiction with the country’s interests, and is affecting its “brotherly” relations with Turkey.

The Foreign Ministers of Armenia and Turkey signed Saturday in Zurich, Switzerland, protocols for establishing diplomatic relations, and for reopening of the joint border that has been closed since 1993.

Azerbaijan says it appreciates the restoration of communications in the region but believes this move could threaten the peace in the region.

The Nagorno-Karabakh region is an Armenian-populated enclave in Azerbaijan over which the two countries have been entangled in a long-term conflict. Turkey has traditionally supported Azerbaijan.
