Ukraine has paid Russia for the October 2009 natural gas supplies, which has assuaged fears about the breakup of a new gas crisis between the two states not unlike the one in January.

The news was announced Friday by Ukrainian Prime Minister, Yulia Tymoshenko, during her visit to the Eastern Ukrainian city of Mariupol.

In her words, the Ukrainian national gas company Naftogaz has paid the Russian provider Gazprom the due USD 500 M (EUR 336 M) for the gas supplied in October.

At the end of last week, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin declared a new gas crisis might be looming as Ukraine seemed to have trouble coming up with the needed funds. Shortly after his statement, the Ukrainian gas company Naftogaz admitted in a communique it had difficulties finding the money.

Bulgaria was one of the worst affected countries in the January 2009 Russia-Ukraine gas war, and Bulgarian analysts have recently underscored the country's unpreparedness for a repetition of the same scenario.

The realities of capitalism and the economy will very soon teach all Eastern European countries that their best opportunities and trading partners are their neighbors especially the ones with common heritage!

Ukraine and Russia consider yourselves lucky having all those riches and resources within your reach and it’s about time to utilize them!

Pantudi,
I have no idea what are you talking about (steel and locomotives, etc.) but here I’l help you get out of the 19-century. It’s different world out there.

Check the sizes of the economies according to the CIA here:

https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/rankorder/2001rank.html

This is what the Russian industries are according to the CIA:

complete range of mining and extractive industries producing coal, oil, gas, chemicals, and metals; all forms of machine building from rolling mills to high-performance aircraft and space vehicles; defense industries including radar, missile production, and advanced electronic components, shipbuilding; road and rail transportation equipment; communications equipment; agricultural machinery, tractors, and construction equipment; electric power generating and transmitting equipment; medical and scientific instruments; consumer durables, textiles, foodstuffs, handicrafts"

This is what the Ukrainian industries are according to the CIA:

“coal, electric power, ferrous and nonferrous metals, machinery and transport equipment, chemicals, food processing (especially sugar)”

As far as those two (Ukraine and Russia) are concerned, just wait and see. I personally give them only 5 years during which the growth of Russia will bring it to number one (largest GDP) economy in Europe and Ukraine will not be much behind having the population and labor market backed up by their resources.

Like I said, just wait and see.

Russians are lazy alcoholics. It is a well-known fact that alcohol kills brain cells. Furthermore, Russians are drug addicts and infected with AIDS most of them. Russia is not going anywhere in the near future except down.

Nellie,

Russians lazy? I don’t recall in history the Russians buying, selling, and owning slaves to do the job for them. The US did it for two hundred years, and that should tell you who is lazy!

According to your intelligence agency (CIA) only 1.1% of the Russians are infected with HIV and 0.60% are the infected in the US, which still makes the US the one with the larger number infected and living with AIDS based on the population of the country.

"...and owning slaves to do the job for them. "

Gosho,
The Americans had slaves from Africa, the Russians had their Mujiks--their own kin--Russian slaves that were "freed" shortly before the revolution.

" I don’t recall in history the Russians buying, selling, and owning slaves to do the job for them. The US did it for two hundred years, and that should tell you who is lazy!"

The Russians had slaves in the form of indentured servants. The landlords owned whole villages of people as well as the land. During communist times, Russia used the whole of Eastern Europe for slaves. Are you kidding me?

Owning slaves is not being lazy, it is being enterprising. The US is the most enterprising nation in the world, until the third world started infiltrating, penetrating, and violating us.

"The origins of serfdom in Russia are traced to Kievan Rus in the 11th century. Legal documents of the epoch, such as Russkaya Pravda, distinguished several degrees of feudal dependency of peasants. Traditionally, the term for an unfree peasant in the Russian Empire, krepostnoi krestyanin (крепостной крестьянин), is translated as serf."

Didn't they teach you in school about that, Gosho?

DP, Nellie,

Please don’t be sore losers. I can feel your agony in losing positions and prestige but, the truth of the matter is that the world is changing like it or not. The power is shifting to new markets with more opportunities and better potential. Russia happens to be one of them and as you can see their economy is already the seventh largest in the world.

Remember now everybody is a capitalist!

It’s not a “clikable” link, just highlight, copy and paste in the address bar. Then press enter.

What is the most important conclusion from the Sofia Mayor elections on November 15, 2009?
That the ruling party GERB of PM Borisov continues to be hugely popular, whereas the Socialists are pretty much out.

That the decline of the Socialist Party has stopped whereas the ruling party GERB has failed to attract the expected very high number of voters.

That the Sofia residents are either completely disillusioned with politics, or care little about who is Mayor.

That the record-high jackpot of the Bulgarian State Lottery "Toto" generated much greater interest than the Mayor elections.
