Bulgaria: UK Commissioner Catherine Ashton Becomes EU Foreign Policy High Representative

EU Commissioner for trade, UK’s Catherine Ashton was selected by the EU leaders Thursday night as the first High Representative for Foreign Policy of the European Union under the Lisbon Treaty when Belgian PM Van Rompuy was elected EU President.

Ashton was elected at the special summit of the 27 EU heads of state, the BBC has reported citing diplomatic sources. Belgian PM Van Rompuy was elected EU President.

According to the BBC, after it dropped the bid of Tony Blair for EU President, the UK has persuaded the other six leaders in the socialist group to back Baroness Ashton.
