The EC Interim Report on Bulgaria is the best assessment the country has received from Brussels so far, Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, said in Doha Tuesday.
Borisov, who is on a 2-day official visit to Qatar, was extremely pleased about the report, which praises the efforts and the political will of his Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) cabinet. The PM stressed on the words “political will” and the fact Bulgaria receives for the fist time a better grade than neighboring Romania.
Regrading criticism of the judicial system, voiced in the report, Borisov advised all those involved with this system to read it carefully and draft their own plan that will help their self reform. Borisov further asked the EU to become part of the process because they have been the ones that accepted Bulgaria as a member with a faulty legal system.
Justice Minister, Margarita Popova, informed recently that a long-term strategic judicial reform has been worked on. The PM stated he accepts all the assessments in the EC report and vowed to undertake the necessary steps to make the next one even better.
Several institutions such as the Justice Ministry and the Foreign Affairs Ministry have already issued statements defining the report as positive and encouraging. The Interior Ministry is yet to comment on the EC report.
The opposition is playing down Brussels praise and focuses on the criticism. Bulgaria's Socialist Party (BSP) leader and ex PM, Sergey Stanishev, stated that the previous government should be given credit by the European Commission and by the present leadership.
