South Korea's Defense Minister Kim Tae-young has resigned as a result of the criticism of the country's response to an artillery bombardment by North Korea.
South Korean President Lee Myung-bak accepted the resignation of "to improve the atmosphere in the military and to handle the series of incidents", as a presidential official said.
Kim resigned also in May 2010 after the sinking of a South Korean naval vessel in March, but President Lee asked him to stay on in the job.
On Tuesday, Pyongyang fired a barrage of 170 artillery shells at the island of Yeonpyeong off the peninsula's west coast on Tuesday, with 80 of the shells reaching South Korea
Two civilians and two soldiers were killed and dozens of houses were destroyed.
South Korean troops fired back 13 minutes later, causing unknown damage. Members of President Lee's ruling conservative party and opposition lawmakers accused the military of responding too slowly.
