An armed 17-year-old has taken about several children hostage in a nursery school in the French city of Besancon, the BBC informed.

According to initial reports, the young man took 20 children hostage, but later released five of them. He was armed with knives and swords.

The Besancon mayor was quoted saying most children have been released and about five were still inside the nursery school.

The police have arrived at the scene. They have not yet announced whether teachers were also held hostage.

France Info radio has reported that the teenager was “unstable,” the BBC reported.
