A student from the southern Bulgarian city of Kardzhali has seen his name first on the list of those who have been able to solve a complicated math problem, published in the specialized American magazine Mathematical Reflections.
Ivan Gerganov, who is in grade 8th in the Kardzhali "P. R. Slaveykov" school, had learned the great news on January 7th, which is also his name day – Ivanov den, local media writes.
The problem had been published in issue No. 6 of the magazine in 2010, while the list has been announced in its first 2011 edition.
The complexity level of the problem is way above the student's grade level. It is usually solved by students enrolled at American and European universities. Ivan is the youngest from the list of those who have been able to find a solution for Mathematical Reflections.
The teenager also studies extensively English and Spanish. His math teacher informs the problem was from a math area Ivan had worked on less than some others.
The student says at first the problem appeared difficult, but after assessing it, he also decided to tackle it, and reached the right solution in 2 weeks.
The math school in the city receives regular support from the American Foundation for Bulgaria.
