Bulgaria's PM Boyko Borisov has stated that the Schengen entry would not loosen the country, but would rather encourage it to protect the external EU border, which is currently kept safe in the best possible way in Europe.

Borisov's statement was made Wednesday at his meeting with the President of the European Union, Herman Van Rompuy.

"I assured Herman Van Rompuy that this year's accession of Bulgaria to the Schengen Agreement would not looses us up, which is one of EU's main concerns. On the contrary, it would encourage us to be more active and fulfill our duties on keeping the external border of the EU, which at present is kept safe in probably the best possible way in Europe," Borisov said.

The prime minister expressed confidence that the country can handle the expected immigration pressure.

"We will manage because we have an increased staff of the border police and we hope that it would be tolerated when the EU makes a decision after its final check for Schengen on March 24. I am confident that all technical reports would be perfect," Borisov said.

He also expressed hope that the Council of Roma Integration, which is to be held in July, will acknowledge Bulgaria's efforts on the matter.

"As for the financial and economic stability and discipline, besides the measures we have already taken, Bulgaria also has a currency board and a fiscal reserve and in practice, the Bulgarian lev and the euro are bound by this mechanism," Borisov said.

He also added that Bulgaria was ready with a proposal for Constitutional amendments guaranteeing stable state finances, known as the "Financial Stability Pact".

"I can assure you that what we do at the moment is good for Europe and we will continue, as you said, in this way," Borisov told Van Rompuy.

On his part, the EU President said he was informed about Bulgaria's impressive achievements on its way to the Schengen Agreement.

He noted that Bulgaria and Romania's accession to the Schengen Area, continues to be a priority of the Hungarian EU Presidency, as long as they fulfill all the requirements.
