Rebekah Brooks, the recently resigned director of the British branch of Rupert Murdoch's media empire, has been released on bail.

The 43-year-old former head of News International was arrested Sunday over suspected involvement in corruption and phone hacking after going voluntarily and by appointment to a London police station.

Brooks insists she was unaware of the hacking her employees were doing at the time she was Editor-in-Chief of the now-closed tabloid News of the World (NoW). Nevertheless, she went to the police saying she wanted to help the investigation in the illegal hacking and bribing of police officers.

The police say the most serious violations happened precisely when Brooks has been the Editor-in-Chief of NoW - the time when missing schoolgirl Milly Dowler's phone was hacked and messages were deleted. The teenager was later found murdered.

Brooks was initially held on suspicion of conspiring to intercept communications and corruption allegations, reported Sky News, which is also owned by Murdoch.

Brooks became the tenth person to be arrested in connection with the scandal with the British tabloid since detectives reopened their investigation earlier this year. A separate investigation, titled Operation Elveden, is looking at allegations of inappropriate payments to police.

Operation Weeting of the UK police has been launched to investigate claims that newspaper journalists hacked into the phones of high-profile figures and even victims of crime.

Brooks resigned as Chief Executive of News International (NI) on Friday
