Holiday Exodus: Traffic Surge Anticipated as Bulgarians Return Home
As the March 3 national holiday weekend comes to a close, travelers are advised to brace themselves for heavy traffic on major roads and highways across the country
Bulgaria's government is set to raise the country's motorway speed limit to 140 km/h (87 m/h), it has been announced.
If the legislative amendment prepared by the Bulgarian Regional Development Ministry is passed by the Parliament, drivers will be allowed to travel a little bit faster without breaking the law, the 24 chasa daily and the bTV private channel inform. The current speed limit for highways in the country is 130 km/h.
"Let's be honest – who is driving with 120 km/h on the highway?" Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov has rhetorically asked, explaining that 140 km/h is a decent speed for modern cars.
People may still drive with 110 km/h or 12o km/h if they want to, the Prime Minister has pointed out. Borisov has added that the new speed limit for highways will lead to less drivers being sanctioned.
The speed limit will not be upped to 140 km/h for buses and trucks.
The amendments to Bulgaria's Road Traffic Act will also regulate the so-called "high-speed" roads which are expected to be constructed in the country.
The "high-speed" roads will have two lanes in each direction; however, they do not meet all requirements for being qualified as highways such as an emergency lane, which will make their construction less expensive.
The speed limit for high-speed roads will be 120 km/h.
