Serbia Allows Free Movement of Kosovo Citizens

World | December 22, 2011, Thursday // 20:11

Serbia's government has decided to allow the free movement on its territory of all citizens of the Republic of Kosovo.

Serbia banned the free movement of Kosovars after the Albanian-dominated government in Prishtina declared independence from it in February 2008.

The new decree of the Serbian Cabinet allows all Kosovo citizens to enter Serbia and to move freely around the country, Serbian government spokesman Milivoe Mihajlovic announced Thursday.

Kosovars will be able to go to Serbia with their IDs issued by the government in Prishtina; they will be able to take advantage of the free movement in Serbia effective next week.

Serbia's former province Kosovo declared independence in February 2008 after being ruled by the UN and KFOR since 1999.

As of December 2011, a total of 85 out of 193 (44%) United Nations member states, 22 out of 27 (81%) European Union member states, 24 out of 28 (86%) NATO member states, and 27 out of 57 (47%) member states of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) have recognized Kosovo.

Notable non-recognizers in addition to Serbia include Russia, China, Brazil, as well as Spain, Greece, Romania, Cyprus, and Slovakia in the EU.
