Bulgaria Loses Billions Annually Due to Delayed Schengen Membership, Warns Economy Minister
Bulgaria stands to lose approximately BGN 1 billion each year due to its continued exclusion from full membership in the Schengen area
Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov has once again boasted about the efficiency of his country's border control.
"Our colleagues from the Netherlands should know that our borders are much better protected than theirs," Borisov claimed on Sunday.
He apparently chose to mention the Netherlands, since it is the only EU country that still officially opposes Bulgaria's bid to join the Schengen Agreement.
However, the Prime Minister went further to state that Bulgaria may be the best equipped country for Schengen.
Borisov's statement came after customs officers busted a total of 67 kilograms of cocaine hidden in a combine harvester traveling from Argentina towards Rotterdam.
According to the Bulgarian authorities, the cocaine was worth around BGN 100 M (approximately EUR 50 M).
