Bulgarian Troops in Charge of Echo Base Security

Politics | February 12, 2005, Saturday

Bulgaria's fourth infantry unit in Iraq has officially taken over the security of Camp Echo upon the order of the commander of the first Multinational Division.

The new responsibilities of the Bulgarian troops will be to ensure the security of the Echo base entries and exits.

General John Abizaid, US Central Command Chief, who was accompanied by Major General Othman Ali Ferhood, the Commander of 8th Division Iraqi National Guard, visited camp Echo Saturday evening, the Public Information Office of the Multinational Division Central - South at Camp Echo, said in a statement, obtained by Sofia News Agency.

The visit was devoted to the current realization of Multinational Division Central-South's goals.

General Abizaid conferred with Major General Waldemar Skrzypczak, Multinational Division Commander, and visited operational section where he got to know with present time situation in Multinational Division Area of Responsibility.

He wished soldiers peacefully military service and all the best.

A staunch ally of the US-led multinational coalition in Iraq, Bulgaria is contributing a nearly 500-strong light infantry unit under Polish commandment within the multinational forces deployed in the south-center part of Iraq. The fourth unit of Bulgaria moved earlier in December from Karbala to Diwaniya to be deployed in the former Spanish base of Echo.

The "temporary withdrawal" of INSEAD Professor Ilian Mihov from becoming Bulgaria's Deputy PM:
resulted from a malicious political plot attacking him in order to hurt the GERB party

resulted from the extravagancy of his ideas about modifying Bulgaria's currency peg leading many serious economists to raise genuine concerns over his appointment

resulted from dissent between the GERB party and its allies thus showing tensions in the ruling majority
