Serbia Admits to Causing Danube Oil Spill

Politics | October 5, 2006, Thursday // 00:00

Serbia has admitted that the huge oil spill plaguing the Danube River came from the country's Prahovo port.

A punctured pipe caused the spill, authorities told private bTV channel, but there is no telling exactly what amount of fuel leaked into the Danube. Serbia managed to stop the spill around noon on Wednesday.

The problem was faulty equipment, and not a human error, the Serbs explained.

Bulgaria has spent a couple of days worriedly following the slick as it makes its way down the Danube and authorities say that the oil has polluted the banks of the river. Now local authorities are ready to intercept the spill with an oil skimmer near Nikopol.

Luckily, there were no incidents in Vidin's thermal plant and the Nuclear Power Plant in Kozloduy, as no oil was allowed in the plants' circulation systems.
